President Goodluck Jonathan to visit Boko Haram’s lair (Borno and Yobe); ...Police stiffens security
President Goodluck Jonathan will visit the troubled states of Borno and Yobe before the end of the week, in a move to probably prove he is not timid as accused by opposition party, Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.
Sources in the presidency say that preparations are in top gear for the president’s visit to the states, with the first delegation of aides travelling to Borno on Tuesday. The President is expected to be in Borno on Thursday.
Criticisms have risen over the President’s hesitance to visit the violence torn state with the latest coming from the ACN.
The opposition party said the president had failed to show leadership by staying away from Borno and Yobe States, fearing only for his personal safety and not taking into cognizance that many of the citizens were being maimed and want an assurance that their government can put an end to the turmoil.
Last Thursday, governors of the newly formed All Progressives Congress, APC, defied reports of grave insecurity to visit Borno State.
The ACN commended the governors saying the visit proves that an APC led government will tackle the Boko Haram situation.
If President Jonathan makes this visit, it will be his first to the troubled states since his assumption of office.
Meanwhile, The Yobe Police Command said it had beefed up security in and around Damaturu ahead of the state visit by President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday.
Alhaji Sanusi Rufa’i, the Commissioner of Police in Yobe, told newsmen in Damaturu on Wednesday that “teams of mobile policemen have been deployed to the state to reinforce the security on ground.
“We are determined and working towards a peaceful and hitch-free presidential visit to the state.’’
The commissioner said the command had deployed its personnel to all the nooks and crannies of the state capital.
