Farmers commit suicide over crop destruction in Anambra
Depressed over the destruction of their crops and thus having no means of repaying the huge debts incurred during the planting season, two farmers in Anambra West Local Government committed suicide.
The farmers, who were said to have borrowed huge sums of money from banks for their farming activities, were left with no crops to harvest, after a surge from the River Niger and its tributaries completely destroyed their farmlands.
According to sources, both men, one from Orom Etiti and the other from Mmiata Anam villages, were due to pay the loans granted them at the end of harvesting of crops by October.
Victor Okoye, the Anambra State House of Assembly representative in the area, urged both the state and the federal governments to come to the aid of the affected farmers.
During a visit to the communities, Okoye said the disaster may lead to famine next year.
