MUST READ!!!: Help Save The Life Of A 27-Year-Old Final Year Student

For 27-year-old Desiree Amaka Eburaja, a final year Marketing student of University of Calabar, fate couldn’t have been more cruel to her than in her present predicament. Her chance of living now hangs in the balance, her dream of becoming a graduate already grounded and as minutes turn to hours and days, her case gets worse, no thanks to a nagging mouth cancer that has plagued her for the last three years.

At present, Desiree, a resident of 7, Subuola Street, Surulere, Lagos and the last born in the family of five, is bedridden. She has lost weight; her left cheek has swollen to the point it is becoming difficult to recognize her. She can no longer walk except with an aid. Eating and drinking of water or any liquid have become impossible tasks for her, because they have to pass through the hole to the ground.

As the clock ticks, her situation gets grimmer, she needs the sum of five million Naira to undergo surgery in India to save her life.

Her dilemma started in May 2009 in school, when she discovered a growth in her left jaw. She thought it was a mere toothache but after taking medications for three weeks to no avail, she decided to consult a doctor in Calabar, who directed her to go for biopsy but before that, a surgery must be carried out to remove the tumor.

Then, she traveled to Kaduna and had the surgery at Maneks Hospital on November 8, 2009; the case was referred to Zaria for histology after the surgery and the result showed that the tumor was cancerous (malignant). She was therefore, referred to the University Teaching Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, where she undergone Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy in 2010.

It got better after the surgery; the swollen side went down but the hole, where the tumor was removed, refused to heal (close up). Throughout last year, she couldn’t do anything on the cancer until early this year.

On January 9, 2012, she went for another MRI scan in Lagos, where it was discovered through the result that the sore has become deeper and wider than before. Another round of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy treatment was again recommended for her to completely treat the disease. But this time around, she would need to travel to India for the treatment and the sum of N5m is needed for the treatment. This covers the surgery, visa, passport and all other expenses.

Now, the cancer had eaten part of the jawbone and the left side of her face has swollen again. She can hardly talk because of the incessant pain. In the process of dressing the wound, she has been losing blood and whenever the wound bleeds, it always makes her unconscious. She can neither drink water nor eat properly.

In her groan-filled speech last week, Desiree lamented that she feels pains all over her body. She can no longer walk, she finds it difficult to sleep and to even sit down is an impossible task for her. Her sister always bears her on the back to the hospital.

At this point, the family is seeking the help of kind-hearted Nigerians to help save the life of ailing Desiree that she may live again. Due to the heavy financial burden, she seeks assistance to go for the surgery, get back on her feet and complete her education.

Her mother, Mrs. Amechi Eburaja, who spoke in a grief-laden voice, said the ailment started immediately the father died and the family had spent over N1 million on hospital bills, scan and other medical expenses. She noted that as a widow she has no job and the little money that could have been used to maintain the family has been spent on trying to heal the ailment.

She appeals to government and able Nigerians to assist the family in saving the life of her daughter, who has been bedridden since May 2011. “Nigerians should please assist me financially and anybody willing to pick the cost to save the life of my daughter should come to my aid. I am a widow and I have no job. Please assist me to save the life of my daughter,” she pleaded.
